Most of you probably know by now that the US government requires that the credit bureaus offer a free annual credit report, but do you know how and where to get it? Justin Pritchard, our Guide to Banking and Loans tells you about the one and only place you should go to get your free credit report.

If you follow Justin's advice you can get your free credit report and avoid the many companies that try to get you to sign up for their subscription service and, in effect, make you pay for a service that you can get totally free.

Once you get your credit report you are going to want to know how to read and it what to do about it if it is less favorable than you would like. Our Credit and Debt Management Guide, LaToya Irby, gives you an overview of your credit report. Our Financial Planning Guide, Jeremy Vohwinkle, tells you what you can do to improve your credit score.

I have tried this site several times and all it does is state that personal information has not been filled out correctly. That is incorrect! This site has only worked once for me-when it was first formed. Someone needs to look into this. Thank you.

Hey Jo! If you are trying the AnnualCreditReport.com then you will have to provide them with your information & they will ask you for some security information (it may be about the account number for something on your credit report or about your loan/mortgage payments.) Those are security questions in order to get your credit report via online you may have to click the link on their website to mail in the request which I believe you will have to include documents verifying your identity.
