No the US Govt does not give grants to individuals - grants are made to states - doled out by yes government - If you bought anything for any amount stating the govt would give you free money - 1st get a refund or do a charge back on your credit card 2nd - report the scammer to the Attorney General, FTC, OFC ( financial crimes ) SEC etc.

Hi Lee,
Thank you for this article on government grants. Last year I lost my marriage of 33 yrs, my home (worked all those yrs for), most of my pets, and my job. My youngest daughter and I struggle every day to make ends meet, but we try to stay upbeat and look toward the future. We’ve started a little site trying to sell our artwork, etc.
In the mean time, I would like to go to school, as would my daughter, however I don’t see how we can. So naturally, these adds for free government grants are very enticing. I have started to look into some of them myself only to find that they always ask for money in one way or other. The worse is when you end up
paying a large sum of money monthly. I am unable to do this, so never have. But I think that a lot of people may not read the very very fine print that explains this. Thank you again, and keep up the great work Lee!

The Foundation Center, www.foundationcenter.org, is a directory of private philanthropic and grant making foundations on the Internet. You will not find government grants to start a business or purchase a home, but valid non-profit groups, students, and artists can research possible grants for free. Most states have a Cooperating Collection of the Foundation Center located in libraries, universities or other centers that provide free information and resource materials to grantseekers.

These so called free grants only point you to the ones you can find out on your own such as the pell grant, state grants for students, etc. that you would find out about by filling out the fasfa which is free. Also for starting a business start with your local unemployment office, small business incubator, community action agency, local state/community colleges. Also check out your states website which will have links and info. There are grants and stipends in NJ for artist to practice their. You should check out your states website and dig in their. For art go to NJ Arts Council or some such. Then you will find the links for the real state stuff which is coming from the feds.
