If you have had your current email address for more that a couple months, you are probably a victim of at least some spam, and we are not talking about the canned meat product. If you have had your email address for a few years, it is very likely that your inbox is inundated with spam. The volume of Spam, or unsolicited commercial email (UCE) is growing rapidly. Most email users are, or will be, buried in spam without some means automated means of dealing with it.
Fortunately there are tools available to help fight the spam monster, and there are a number of good one that are free. No anti-spam product out there, whether pricey or free is 100% effective. There will always be some spam that makes it to your inbox and some good mail that gets caught. However, many of the products can reduce your spam load substantially and contain safeguards to keep false positives from being lost.
The free anti-spam tools take a variety of approaches to combating spam. Some are fairly simple filter add-ons to your email client and some offer more complex filtering before the email even gets to your computer. A few of the tools can be used no matter what your operating system is, because they are Net based, but most require Windows to run client software.
It is difficult to say which product is the best, since a lot depends on how you wish to use your email and what other criteria you might have for liking a disliking certain tools. Since they are all free, you may want to try out a couple different tools until you find the one that works best for you.
