Do you love to read, but hate to spend money on books or don't have time to go to the library? Free online books may be the pathway to your perusing pleasure.
Even if you own a library of books and visit your local public library often you may still appreciate some of the advantages of online books. Try doing a full text search on all those printed books sometime.
The first and the most monumental effort to make books available in computer readable form was Project Gutenberg. In 1971 Michael Hart was given a huge amount of computer time and wanted to come up with a valuable use for it. In a short time Project Gutenberg was under way. Over the years many volunteers have scanned, formatted and proof read over 1900 texts.
All of the Project Gutenberg e-texts are in plain ASCII format so they can be read using virtually any computer in the world. Many of the sites I have listed in the online book links have fancier versions of online books that are derived from Project Gutenberg e-texts. We can thank Michael Hart and all those volunteers for providing a great free resource.
