Information is a valuable commodity, but there is more information than you or I could ever absorb available for free on the Web. The only problem is finding the information you need when you need it. Most people resort to using search engines or general purpose directories to find whatever information they are looking for on the Web.
The fact is, it is often more productive to visit sites that are more specialized. In the real world, when you want to find the meaning of a word, you open a dictionary. When you need some basic information for a school report you often turn to an encyclopedia. When you need a phone number you go to the phone book. You can find all of these types of information resources and much more on the Web.
There is a section on this site called Free Information Services with links to over 30 of these very useful information sources. The links are listed in alphabetical order by the title of the resource. Some of these are Web based versions of popular offline resources and some are totally unique to the Web.
You will find four or so online encyclopedias, and several ways to find phone numbers including a reverse phone number lookup. There are online dictionaries and other language references. You can check your local weather forecast, find out what is on TV, learn the meaning of confusing computer jargon and much more.
If it turns out that the information for which you are searching is not in any of these references, don't forget that the entire About network with hundreds of sites is also a great source of free information. You can search the network or start at the About home page and browse by category to find information on thousands of topics. I've listed links to some of the information channels in the link box above. This is a very small sampling of the kind of free information you can find on the About network.
