Do you find yourself spending too much money every time you go out to have some family fun? Or perhaps you just stay home because you can't afford to go out. If you can identify with either of these, you will want to take a look at all of the free and fun activities you can find in your own hometown.

I've assembled a sampling of free activities links from the About Cities and Towns Guides. This list is not comprehensive, but even if you don't find something close to you, it may spark some ideas of the types of things to look for in your area. You may want to browse the Cities and Towns site listings for activities in locales I've not listed. When you visit this index, you will want to select your region and get a list of sites in that part of the country. You can then visit the site closest to your home and see what ideas that Guide may have.

You can also visit the About Travel Channel and do some browsing from there. Even if you are not planning a trip, there may be a travel destination close to your home. Look for a future article to highlight free activities for travelers.

Pat Veretto, the About Frugal Living Guide, always has an angle or two on saving money. The subject of finding free and cheap activities is no exception. Be sure to check out her advice on Frugal Summer Activities. Even though the article has a summer theme, most of the advice is helpful any time of year.

Other places to look for free activities and events include your local newspaper and community bulletin boards at your local library, grocery stores and other public places. Many local television and radio stations do community announcements that often include free local activities. If you have friends that are particularly frugal, they will probably have a line on the most of the free activities and will be very happy to clue you in on their finds. All it takes to save money on your activities is a little digging in the right places. Now go have fun for free.
