One of the things that breast cancer patients and other seriously ill people often need to deal with is travel for treatment. These patients face many financial pressures. It is not uncommon for the optimum treatment to be out of their immediate area. Even when treatments are covered by insurance, the expense of airline tickets may not be.
Most of my articles and links tend to not address serious financial needs, but this article is in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month to help patients who need to travel for treatment, but don't have the financial means to do so. There is information here that can be used by patients, their families and social workers to help secure the transportation needed to access optimal care.
Fortunately, there are a number of organizations that have made it their mission to overcome this barrier. I have assembled a page of links called Free Medical Transport for Those in Need.
There are also other resources you may be able to use for air travel or ground transportation.
- Check with the hospital. Many major hospitals can help you find free or low cost transportation.
- For ground transportation, often hotel shuttle bus services will offer free transportation for patients.
- Car rental agencies may be able to help out with free or low rates.
- Churches, synagogues and the YWCA or YMCA may offer travel support.
- Check the phone book for local government agencies that may be able to help.
Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you are not comfortable with or well enough to investigate the various avenues of assistance, you can ask the hospital social worker to help. You also may have a friend or family member who would be more than happy to help you find the resources you need.
Travel can be a big obstacle, but you don't have to let it keep you from getting the treatment you need.
