I knew some game companies had been releasing a few of their older titles as free downloads, but until I encountered the site "Liberated Games" I had no idea how many games had been set free by their producers.
Matt Matthews and Marvin Malkowski Jr. decided to build a resource site that keeps track of the games that have been released for free access. There are basically two types of free games listed on their site.
The games that are listed as source code only are not generally playable as they are but they allow other developers to learn from the source code or add their own data (graphics, maps, etc) to create a playable game.
The binary downloads, however, are usually fully playable copies of the game. These are the ones that most game players will be looking for.
There are a number of platforms represented in the list of binary downloads including Windows, Mac, Linux, and occasionally other platforms. Since many of these are older games, some may not be compatible with current versions of the operating systems.
Liberated Games only lists games that have officially been released for free. You can be sure all the downloads are legal. These guys not only track and list the free games. If they see a lot of interest in a particular older title they will try to convince the producers to make them available for free. Liberated Games is a site that every avid gamer is going to want to check out.
