Gigabyte Email Showdown

Here is a quick overview of three free gigabyte email accounts.

Gmail really has only one drawback as far as I'm concerned and that is at this writing, it's only available by invitation. (See the update on page one of this article to find out how anyone should now be able to get a free invitation.) The Google account has the same kind of no nonsense functionality you would expect from Google. Here are a few of the high points of the Gmail service:

  • The interface is very clean and very fast. You don't need to sit and wait for pages to load.

  • Messages are threaded like on a forum. All messages in a conversation are listed together and are easy to read and review.

  • There is an archive button, so you can move your messages out of the inbox for storage with one click.
  • Spymac started out as Mac news site, but they have now added other services, including a free gigabyte email account, that work just as well with Windows and Linux as they do with Macs. The service is not as fast and elegant as Gmail, but it comes in a respectable second place. Here is what I liked about the Spymac service:

    • It’s available to everyone now.

    • Spymac also has a very nice online calendar that you can synchronize with Outlook.

    • You also get a free photo gallery, free blog, and free website.
    • Walla also offers a free gigabyte email account. With Internet Explorer, the interface looks nice and is very functional, however, with the Mozilla Firefox browser, many of the features are not available or do not work properly. The service also tends to be slow and I found myself frequently waiting for pages to load.

I will probably find myself using Gmail more than the other two accounts, but depending on what you need and your tastes, Spymac could be a better choice for some. If you use Internet Explorer, Walla is also an acceptable choice.
