Skype

Free Internet Calling

From Lee Seats, for About.com

A number of companies started offering free PC to PC calling during the dot com boom and some even offered free PC to phone and phone to phone calling. With the big dot com crash most of these services disappeared. Now interest in free Internet phone calls has again surged with the arrival of Skype.

“What's a Skype” you ask? Skype is a voice over IP (VOIP) telephone company that has made an enormous splash by offering free high quality PC to PC calling.

Back in the early days of PC to PC calling there were many drawbacks to the services offered including poor voice quality, too few people using the same software, and services that disappeared without warning. Over 100 million people have now downloaded the Skype software. This makes it much more likely that the person you want to call will be able to receive your call. Today fast Internet connections are becoming the norm and the VOIP technology has improved to the point of providing better sound quality than traditional phones.

The Skype software is available for free download and there are versions for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and the Pocket PC. Grab yourself a copy of the Skype software and start talking with your friends and family for free.
