Sinus Relief for (almost) Free

Relieve sinus congestion without decongestants

From , former About.com Guide

I routinely experience mild sinus congestion and I normally avoid treating it with decongestants unless it gets really bad. I don't like the side effects of the medication and I don't like spending money on it either. I recently heard about the concept of sinus rinse, also known as sinus irrigation. I decided to give it a try because people claim it works wonders and because it is an almost free treatment.

Taking the Plunge

I did my first sinus rinse yesterday evening and I must say, the results are pretty amazing. I can breathe more freely today than any time I can remember. Obviously, the procedure felt a bit strange since I'm not accustomed to having my sinuses fill with water. However, it was not at all painful and not as disgusting as it might sound to those who have never done it. You do want to find out how to do it properly including using the proper saline mixture, boiling the water first, and using lukewarm water.

Cheap and Cheaper

I actually didn't go with the cheapest method. I bought a kit at the drugstore for $11 that will do 50 rinses. Saline packet refills to do 100 rinses cost about $11 also. If you follow the instructions from the articles listed below you can spend even less.

Doing it Right

You can find out more about doing a sinus rinse from our Allergies Guide, Daniel More, MD in his article on Nasal Saline Irrigation and from our Alternative Medicine Guide, Cathy Wong in her article on How to Do a Sinus Irrigation. Happy breathing!
