Hi-Tech Freebies

Here is a selection of goodies for those who tend to eat, sleep and breath all things hi-tech. You will find items and services that only the geek in you will truly appreciate.
Visual Studio Partner DVD
Microsoft offers a free DVD with Visual Studio .NET third party tools, languages, and components. This would only be of interest to those programming or planning to program with Visual Studio .NET. (US and Canada)
64-Bit Windows XP One-Year Trial
I don't normally list free trials, but since this one is good for a whole year I figured some of you other geeks out there might be interested. The download version is free but if you want to order it on CD you will need to pay a shipping charge. Obviously you will need an AMD 64-bit processor to get any use out of this operating system.
FreeNet6
Any user of the Internet can receive billions of unique IPv6 addresses. Three or four would suffice for me, but I guess they want to stress how plentiful IPv6 addresses are. This free service allows you to use IPv6 over your present Internet connection.
Hexillion Online Network Utilities
This is great set of tools to help research or troubleshoot Internet issues. (international)
myNetWatchman.com
If you use ZoneAlarm, BlackIce or a similar firewall product you can use this service to make more sense out of the logs and alarms and even become part of the fight against serious hackers.
PatchWork
Steve Gibson is my hero when it comes to security tools and he offers a great free tool you can use to determine if your NT or 2000 Web server is vulnerable to many of the worst security threats. It can also tell you if there is evidence you have already been hacked. (Windows NT or 2000)
Ranish Partition Manager
This is a free tool for changing hard drive partition sizes and types as well as a great place to learn about partitions. Just be sure you know what you are doing before you use these types of tools. You could seriously screw up your computer if you use them carelessly.
Robocode Programable Robot Battle Game
Program your robot to destroy all contenders. This is one cool way to learn Java programming. Actually, you can have fun with this, even if you have no interest in Java. You can easily modify the code by looking at the examples.
Windows Services for UNIX
Microsoft used to charge $99 for this. The new version is free. It allows you to run a UNIX shell and many UNIX utilities in Windows and access NFS shares. Microsoft expects people to use this to help migrate from UNIX or Linux to Windows, but it can also be used to go the other way - (insert big grin here)! It is a large download. You can order a CD but there is a shipping charge.
