The concept of earning rewards for subjecting oneself to advertising is nothing new. There were many such programs during the .com boom and there are still quite a few today. However, most current programs offer very little for the time you have to put into them.
Adperk has put a modern twist on the get paid to view ads model and they sometimes also offer a pretty good perk for a small time investment. They offer free magazines for watching short video ads.
Free Subscriptions
I did earn a free subscription to
Popular Science for less than 15 minutes of watching video ads and some of them were even moderately interesting. The magazines being offered are always changing and sometimes you may find free full subscriptions to earn and sometimes you may only find discounts.
The following free full subscriptions were avialable at this writing:
Field & Stream
Email Advertisements
You may get email advertisements from Adperk and their parent company, Reduce My Fee. After all, they are advertising companies. Their privacy policy states that they will not sell or rent your email address to other companies. However, from the way the policy is written it pretty obvious that they reserve the right to send you lots of their own advertising. Therefore, it would be advisable to use a secondary or "junk" email address when registering. You can unsubscribe from their mailings, but you have to unsubscribe from each "type of mailing," and I suspect they will have lots of "types of mailings" for your junk email pleasure.
The Bottom Line
Adperk provides a fairly quick and easy way to earn free magazine subscriptions as long as you are careful to avoid the "earn a discount and get billed" ones and as long as you use a secondary email account to register. The free subscriptions require a US address. Adperk may not be practical for dial-up users due to the time it takes to download the videos.
Postscript
About two and a half months after I earned my free Popular Science subscription my first issue arrived in the mailbox. This confirms that Adperk does follow through on their offers. I also noticed they are still offering Popular Science plus several other magazines. They have a large list of "coming soon" offers too.
